SPL: DUNFERMLINE 2 HEARTS 1: 23/08/97

This was another excellent performance which flatters Hearts because of the closeness of the scoreline. The Pars have not played so well and so much in command for a long time. Dunfermline forced 5 corners in the first twenty minutes and Hearts did not manage five during the whole 90 minutes. Everyone played well even Harry Curran, and games cannot now come quick enough for the team.

Putting out the same team that started at Celtic Park last week, Dunfermline were unlucky not to score in the first half but put in a second half display that totally overrun the Jambos.

The opening goal came in the 57th minute when Andy Smith headed down a cross for David Bingham to fire at goal from an acute angle on the left. The shot may have gone straight across the goalmouth but David Weir blocked it and let it run behind him for Andy SMITH to ram across the goalline from close in.

Then just ten minutes later Andy Smith got the better of David Weir out on the left corner flag. The Hearts defender rashly cleared for a corner. Andy TOD met Stewart Petrie’s corner and had Rousset looking like something from the Jimmy Greaves archive of Scottish goalkeeping blunders.

Dunfermline then dominated for twenty minutes when they should have scored a few more. Curran, Moore, Smith, Bingham and Petrie all had the Hearts defence in tatters.
Jim Hamilton’s last minute goal was a consolation that they did not deserve.
