League Cup: DUNFERMLINE 1 HEARTS 0 after extra time: 09/09/97

This was a typical cup tie with the game flowing from end to end. Hearts seemed to have learned a lot about Dunfermline’s game in the Premier League match 17 days ago and the visitors started strongly. Pontin received a Shields clearance to cross for Adam whose header slipped past the post. Petrie then got in a cross that David Bingham headed down perfectly but unfortunately just wide of the left goalpost.

Allan Moore was dispossessed by Pontin on the quarter hour and Neil McCann sped in on goal, shooting just past the post.

McCann brought a great save from Ian Westwater in the 32nd minute. This became a feature of the match with the Dunfermline goalie playing a blinder against his old club.

Ten minutes into the second half Ritchie was yellow carded and from the resultant Fleming free kick Smith brought out a great one handed save from Rousset. The deadlock was thwarted by the keepers and with extra time looming Adam burst through the centre but Westwater brilliantly kept the Pars in the match.

Dunfermline finished stronger playing a much better second half. In extra time both sides threatened but Dunfermline did look the fitter. Marc Millar and Colin Miller came on after 13 minutes of extra time and suddenly a goal looked a possibility.

A Westwater free kick was headed on by Ivo Den Bieman, to Smith and into the path of Allan MOORE who buried the ball in the Hearts goal. The last six minutes were frantic but it was Dunfermline’s night.
