Scottish Cup: DUNFERMLINE ATHLETIC 7 EDINBURGH CITY 2: 24/01/98

Edinburgh City travelled to East End Park to face the Pars as League leaders in the East of Scotland Premier Division. For Dunfermline it was either a “banana skin” or a chance to regain their confidence not having won a match since 15th November.

Confidence may have been regained with the margin of the victory but hardly by the manner. The Pars demonstrated their ability to gift goals and their inability to play the ball about in midfield. Take away Andy Smith with his 5 goals and the victory would not have been so comfortable. Too many Dunfermline passes failed to find their intended destination and the play will have to improve now that there is no non-league teams left in the competition.

COLIN MILLER walked through the City defence to score after only 3 minutes. CRAIG ROBERTSON was injured in the process of scoring the second. City playing a solid green strip, then got one back when Ian Westwater went to collect at the edge of his penalty box but managed to get in a mix up with Andy Tod and Foggo slipped the ball into an empty net. ANDY SMITH got the Pars back in the mood with a 33rd minute goal.

Boos resounded at half time as the home support rightly felt that their team should have been further ahead. The second half was Andy Smith’s. The 29 year old striker notched goals with regularity his best converting a Stewart Petrie cross and one coming from the penalty spot to lift the Man of the Match award.
