League Cup: DUNFERMLINE 5 AYR UNITED 1: 09/08/97

Coca Cola Cup

After the previous week’s defeat from Motherwell Allan Moore, Stewart Petrie and David Bingham were in the starting line up. Raymond Sharp and John Fraser were relegated to the bench and Craig Ireland was dropped. The match turned out to be the one sided affair that is expected of this stage of the competition. Andy SMITH taking only six minutes to find the net. Finding the Ayr defence in disarray the big striker took full advantage.

SMITH made 2-0 before equally poor defending by the Pars allowed Wordsworth to get one back for Ayr. It could easily have been 2-2 but having been given a chance Ayr failed to level. Then big Andy was taken down in the penalty box and Hamish FRENCH marched up picked up the ball and converted a 39 minute spot kick. Though Andy Smith could have claimed it for his possible hatrick the striker never even contemplated it. His first half hatrick did come four minutes later to make the second half academic.

Andy SMITH’s fourth was the only highlight of the second half. Dick Campbell explained it “ at that stage the fans wanted a cricket score, though it isn’t as easy as that. But we were worthy winners”.
