Pre Season Friendly: Dunfermline 2 West Ham 2: 22/07/97

Wednesday night’s friendly against West Ham gave home fans a ook at new signings Greg Shields and Dave Barnett.

Both impressed but the old guard of Andy Tod and Andy Smith earned Dunfermline the draw.

The home side got off to a great start scoring in just the third minute. TOD capitalised when Barnett won an aerial challenge to open the scoring. 1-0

It was the Hammers striker John HARTSON who got them back on level terms in 29th minute after a period of greater control. A cross was not cut out and the Welshman crashed the ball home. 1-1

The visitors were boosted by the goal but it was Dunfermline who were to go in ahead at the interval. Andy SMITH glanced a header in just inside the post. 2-1

The Pars led until the 65th minute when Frank Lampard beat the offside trap and set up Paul KITSON to equalise. 2-2

Manager Bert Paton told the Dunfermline Press:-

“You always enjoy it against West Ham. These teams are spending fortunes on players - their two strikers cost about £7m - so I have to be quite happy”.
